When patients in Bangalore search for a dentist, most choose based on location, Google rating, or price. Qualification rarely comes up. But whether your doctor is a general dentist or an MDS specialist affects the quality of your treatment more than any other factor, and it is worth understanding the difference before you book.
What Is a BDS Dentist?
A BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) is a five-year undergraduate dental degree. After completing BDS and registering with the Dental Council of India, a dentist can legally practise across most dental procedures including fillings, extractions, root canals, braces, and basic surgery.
BDS dentists form the majority of dental practitioners across Bangalore. Many are experienced and deliver good results for routine work.
What Is an MDS Specialist?
MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) is a three-year postgraduate programme completed after BDS. Entry requires clearing NEET MDS, a competitive national exam with limited seats at government and accredited private dental colleges. The training is focused entirely on a single dental specialty.
The MDS specialties and what each one covers:
| Specialty | What They Specialise In |
|---|---|
| MDS Endodontist | Root canal treatment, pulp disease, periapical infections |
| MDS Orthodontist | Braces, clear aligners, jaw growth correction |
| MDS Periodontist | Gum disease, bone loss, implant placement |
| MDS Oral Surgeon | Complex extractions, jaw surgery, trauma |
| MDS Pedodontist | Children's dentistry and early orthodontics |
| MDS Prosthodontist | Crowns, bridges, dentures, full-mouth reconstruction |
| MDS Oral Medicine Specialist | Oral cancer screening, radiographic diagnosis |
Does It Matter for Routine Treatment?
For a routine check-up, a simple filling, or an uncomplicated extraction, a skilled and experienced BDS dentist is entirely adequate. The qualification gap becomes significant for complex procedures.
Where the Difference Shows Up
Root canal treatment
A molar with curved canals, calcification, or a previously failed root canal is a different level of case from a straightforward front tooth. An MDS Endodontist with a microscope can see canal anatomy at 20x magnification, identify missed canals, and clean the root system in a way that is not possible with the naked eye. The retreatment rate for microscopic endodontics is meaningfully lower than for conventional technique.
Orthodontic treatment
An MDS Orthodontist assesses not just tooth positions but jaw growth patterns, skeletal relationships, and airway considerations. In children and teenagers, getting this wrong means avoidable treatment later. The technical management of complex biting problems and jaw discrepancies requires specialist training that a BDS course does not cover.
Dental implants
Implant placement involves surgical planning: how much bone is available, where the nerve sits, what angulation will give the best aesthetic result, whether grafting is needed. An MDS Periodontist or Oral Surgeon has spent three years training in surgical technique and complication management. The consequences of poor angulation or surgical error in implant placement are significant.
Gum disease
Moderate to severe periodontitis involves deep pocket cleaning, bone assessment, and in many cases surgical management. This level of treatment is within the specific scope of MDS Periodontics training. A general dentist performing a basic scale-and-polish for a patient with advanced bone loss is not providing the treatment the case requires.
The Staffing Problem in Many Bangalore Clinics
A common model in larger dental clinics and chains in Bangalore is to have one or two MDS specialists on the roster, often as visiting consultants, with general dentists handling the volume of cases. A patient booked in for root canal treatment may see the MDS Endodontist for the initial assessment and then be handed over to a junior associate for the actual treatment. Braces may be started by an MDS Orthodontist and continued by someone without that qualification.
It is worth asking directly: who will perform my treatment on every appointment, and what is their qualification for this procedure?
